Diatomaceous Soils and Advances in Geotechnical Engineering—Part I

چکیده

Diatoms are microscopic algae with a skeleton called frustule, formed chiefly of silica, and found in almost all aquatic environments climatic conditions. Diatomaceous soils (DSs) originate from frustule sedimentation. In civil works (design construction), the uncommon values obtained DSs not completely understood. There needs to be more knowledge about strength compressibility DSs. The stability these deposits is still being determined. Definitions substances such as diatoms, diatomaceous soils, earth, oozes, frustules, diatomite need clarified. This document references construction processes that face problems differential settlements, pile rebounds, irregular pore pressures due frustules. review analyzes multiple sets results regarding grain size distribution, specific gravity, consistency, plasticity, compressibility, shear It concluded particle distribution generally classifies them silts. Particles modified by imposition stresses (frustule breakage), which impacts compressibility. Microfossils take up stresses, restrict strains, cause sudden increases when their yield stress exceeded. Currently, strain mechanisms better Gs decreases increasing content, given high porosity skeletons. intraparticle pores frustules explain liquid limit (LL) can have strengths large surfaces “interlocking” phenomenon interparticle contacts’ frictional component caused rough surface silica content.

Geotechnical Aspects of Light Structures on Expansive Soils

The geotechnical behaviour of expansive clay soils is investigated by looking into the geomorphologic, geological and climatic conditions and mineralogical composition of the soils in the study area. The geotechnical results are linked with the performance of the foundation as well as structures. Since swell potential and swell pressure are key properties of expansive soils, the swell parameter...

Effects of Soil Pollution on Geotechnical Behaviour of Soils

Ground pollution arises from the impact of past and current industrial activity and due to improper disposal of waste generated by society. Geoenvironmental engineering deals with the most important aspects: (a) Soil pollution processes and effect on geotechnical properties, and (b) Waste Management. Soil-pollutants interaction changes soil behaviour and also can lead to various geotechnical pr...

Geotechnical Evaluation of Soils in Numan and Its Environs , North East Nigeria

A geotechnical evaluation of some soils in Numan, Adamawa, North –East, Nigeria has been carried out. This was done to determine the suitability of the soils for use as subgrade/filling, sub-base and base course materials for road construction. The samples were collected from five different areas, at surface and sub-surface levels. The areas are New Demsa, Farei, Dowaya, Numan Town and Imbru. T...
